Shilpa Mudabi

Shilpa Mudbi Kothakota is a filmmaker, theatre practitioner, storyteller, and vocalist from Bangalore. Her creative journey weaves together cinema, stage, and song, with a deep focus on rural landscapes, agriculture, women’s rights, and the environment. She has taught film and storytelling at Samvada & Baduku Community College and Mount Carmel College, and worked with Rangashankara in Bangalore and Indianostrum Theatre in Pondicherry.

In 2023, she co-founded the Urban Folk Project with Adithya Kothakota to research, document, and bring folk experiences from across Karnataka to urban audiences. In her celebrated performance Yellamma and Other Stories, she sings and narrates the story of Goddess Renuka Yellamma while playing the rare single-string instrument, the shruti — offering audiences a moving glimpse into Karnataka’s folk traditions.

At BBLF 2025, Shilpa brings her vibrant voice and stories from the heart of Karnataka’s cultural heritage to the festival stage.
