Kum Veerabhadrappa

“Popularly known as Kum. Vee., the novelist and short story writer Kum. Veerabhadrappa crossed the fences of Kannada literature’s refined tradition through his novella “Beli mattu Hola” (Fences and Fields), attracting readers with his unique linguistic experiments and idiomatic expressions. The language used in his stories and novels earned him a distinct place in literature. Through works like “Elugemba Korachanu ChauDanemba Handiyu” (The Bear Named Koracha and the Boar Named ChauDa) and “Kattalige Trishoola Hidida Kathe” (The Story That Held a Trident Against Darkness), he redefined the direction of short stories.

The movie “Mana Mechchida Hudugi”, starring Shivraj Kumar, was based on his novel “Bete”. The film “Dore” was based on his novel “Beliya Hoovugalu”. Two other notable films based on his stories are “Kotraeshi Kanasu” and “Kendada Male”. Another significant work of his, “Koormavatara” , directed by Girish Kasaravalli, won national-level awards.

While working as the headmaster of a primary school in Hirehalli, Andhra Pradesh, he expanded from creative writing into non-fiction. Kum. Vee. wrote an important work on Charlie Chaplin. He also authored the novels Shyamanna, Yaapillu, and Aramane. His novel Aramane (The Palace) won the Central Sahitya Akademi Award in 2007.
