C Basavalingaiah

As an actor, director, playwright, organizer, C Basavalingaiah brought uniqueness to Kannada theatre. A graduate of the National School of Drama along with a master’s degree in Kannada, he is a prominent artist who has brought national recognition to Kannada theatre. 

 Basavalingaiah, who studied the folk theatre arts of North Karnataka on a fellowship from the National School of Drama, has actively involved himself as a promoter of the holistic development of theatre. His contribution to theatre as a member of Karnataka Natak Academy, as a theatre leader in the repertoire of Natak Karnataka Rangayana, as an organizer of theatre training camps and as a director of Rangayana is invaluable.

He is credited with directing music for more than 30 plays including Kannada, Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam. Madari Madaiya, Sankranti, Huliya Neralu, Macbeth, Santyaga Nintana, Kabira, Andhayuga, Uchalya, Kusumbale are the important plays directed by him. In 1996, Karnataka Natak Academy honoured him as one of the active artistes who organized more than 80 stage training camps nationwide and kept the stage movement alive.
