Gogu Shyamala is a prominent contemporary Dalit writer and Telugu poet. Her debut collection in English, translated from Telugu, “Father May Be An Elephant and Mother Only a Small Basket, But…” (2012), is considered a significant work in Indian literature from Telangana Dalit literature. She co-edited The Oxford India Anthology of Telugu Dalit Writing (2016). and “Nallaregati Sallu” . The stories of Madiga and its Satellite community’s women. She received critical acclaim for her earlier collection, an edited book known as “Nallapoddu: Dalita Sthrila Sahitya Sankalanam” (2003), which features writings by Dalit women across the state. Shyamala obtained her PhD in 2019 from the Department of Social Exclusion Studies, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. She wrote a biography of Sadalakshmamma life history, first Endowment minister of united Andhra in 1961. Her writings have been included in the curricula of higher education institutions in Telangana and the University of San Francisco, USA. Nottingham UK.
